Reiter about Abraham Lincoln that begins with Lincoln's grandfather. The biography is organized chronologically and briefly summarizes different parts of Lincoln's life. For example, early in the biography, descriptions are given of Lincoln's impoverished childhood, of living in destitute log cabins in the woods with few personal belongings and little education. Reiter continues and says that the quality of Lincoln's life improved with his thirst for knowledge and goal of reading and learning as much as he could (he often borrowed books whenever he found the chance). Also noted are Lincoln's early occupations, such as shop owner and postmaster, and his eventual foray into law. After being admitted to the bar, Lincoln went to practice law in different firms. Later, Reiter describes Lincoln's aspirations to become a Congressman so that he could create change for the better. Reiter describes Lincoln's friendly and gentle disposition and being a friend to many. She also highlights other positive traits of Lincoln such as his well-formed logic, skill at oratory and legal argumentation, and virtues such as honesty, generosity, and concern for the well-being of humans and animals alike (two anecdotes describe Lincoln as rescuing two baby birds and freeing a pig trapped in a fence). After being elected to Congress, Reiter proceeds to discuss Lincoln's rise to the presidency. Reiter also refers to parts of Lincoln's personal life such as his marriage to Mary Todd Lincoln. Reiter also addresses Lincoln's public (and personal) opposition to slavery and his issuance of the Emancipation Proclamation and portrays this facet of Lincoln's policies and actions as being his greatest achievements. Reiter concludes her biography by briefly describing the start and end of the American Civil War and the assassination of Lincoln.. Book. Book Condition: Very Good. Binding: Soft cover
